Configuring Email

Thank you again for choosing us for your email services.  Many of you have received email as part of a hosting package.  Others have ordered Email Only services.  Regardless of how you ordered our services, the same configurations apply.  The following is an overview of the configuration process.  Following that you will find links to pages addressing specific instructions for Eudora 3, Eudora 4, Outlook (used with Internet Explorer) and Netscape Communicator.

The following information is required to configure your email.  Please note that the settings talking about yourname and yourdomain.com are samples only, and you should substitute your account names (ie. john, jsmith, sales, info, etc...) for yourname and your own domain name with its extension for yourdomain.com.

Please note: the following configuration only works for our hosted customers. The mail servers reject any email sent by anyone other than one of our customers. Spamming from our servers is not permitted, nor possible with an outside account as all relaying is disabled.

*** Note: some ISP's require you to send mail through their SMTP server. Sending mail can also be faster through your ISP since you are connected directly to them.

You can configure your email program to use your ISP's SMTP server without any problem. Your email accounts with us will work fine.

Anyone using Mindspring as an ISP must configure their email to use the Mindspring SMTP servers. Mindspring technical support will provide you with the names of their SMTP servers.

Each mail program, whether you are using Eudora, Netscape or any other program, is a little different.  However, they all use the same basic core information in their configurations.  That core information is reflected above.

ALIAS ACCOUNTS
If you only have an alias account / email forwarding account, configuration is extremely simple.  You give us your new email address (such as john@yourdomain.com) and tell us where to forward the mail (such as john@aol.com).  All email will be forwarded automatically.  You can then modify the REPLY TO address in your email program to reflect your new email address (john@yourdomain.com) so when you reply to the messages, it looks like it is coming from your new domain.

POP ACCOUNTS
Chances are, you have ordered a POP account.  This is what you typically think of when you order email service.  This is a "real" account where you can send and receive email.  The only other type of account is an ALIAS ACCOUNT (described above) which essentially functions like call forwarding -- it sends email addressed to one account on to another account.

Email Address
Everyone with email has an email address.  This is a name, an @ sign, and a domain name, such as support@yourdomain.com.  This is the email address that you give out to friends, colleagues and the world, and is what you use when you want someone to send you mail.

User ID
The User ID resembles your email address, but instead of an @ sign, it has a % sign.  We want to stress that this ID is only used by your email program to login to our mail servers.  You never need to give this out to anyone.  It is used solely by your email program as your ID, which is used to login to our systems.  Please make sure that you have the @ sign and % sign correct... the @ sign is used only in email addresses, and the % sign is used only as your login ID.

MAIL SERVERS
An email system located on a mail server is actually composed of two systems: a POP server (used by the servers to receive incoming mail) and a SMTP server (used by the servers to send out mail from you to the world).  Some email programs ask separately for POP servers and SMTP servers, and others just ask for an Email Server generally.  Regardless of the exact language used by your email program, use the settings identified above.
